In 1906, Sealy Hutchings National Bank of Galveston, Texas chartered Citizens State Bank in League City, Texas. In 1931, a young banker, Walter Hall, was asked to take over operations of the League City location. That same year, the bank started offering insurance as an added product. With the help of Hall’s wife, Helen, who served as the bank’s sole employee for numerous years, he worked many long hours to keep businesses and families from going under during the Great Depression and banking crisis of 1933.

Following the discovery of oil in 1934, Dickinson, then a small Texas town, started rapidly growing in the midst of an improving economy. Hall moved the bank and insurance division to Dickinson, hoping to capitalize on the city’s rapid growth.

Along with a group of investors, Hall bought the financial institution in 1943, expanding it to include additional services, drive-in facilities and several branches in the communities of Bacliff, Santa Fe, Texas City and League City.

In the process of growing and initiating changes to better serve its customers, all banking locations merged and adopted a new name in 2001—MaximBank, a name that means, “a truth or fundamental principle.” The name reflected Hall’s dedication to fundamental business principles including dedication to superior customer service, meaningful community involvement and employee enrichment. The insurance division also progressed and began offering commercial marine products to better serve the Texas Gulf Coast area.

In 2003, Hall sold MaximBank to the Southwest Bank of Texas, removing the insurance arm to form MaximInsurance, an independent insurance agency offering commercial insurance, employee benefits, risk management, financial services, life insurance, marine insurance and personal insurance.

Under the leadership of current President, Ron Masters, the agency has expanded to include three locations, more than 40 employees and 8,000 clients. Additionally, the agency changed names one last time to MaximGroup—a name that encompasses the agency’s historical roots, and embraces a bright future.
